Cloudy Afternoon. Artist Charles Wolf.
Acrylic on Canvas Board, 9x12in. Impulsive Artistry © 2017.
One of my favorite tools that I have in my painting kit is the palette knife. While it does take some a practice to get used to the way it applies the paint to the canvas—a light amount of pressure will give you smooth coverage at the surface level and hard pressure will grind the paint into the canvas itself, staining it. I think the reason I enjoy painting with a palette knife is because you can't be as controlled with where the paint goes, creating an impressionist style piece. The end result is always very fresh and vibrant looking, especially if you don't over mix your paint on the canvas, but allow each stroke to be clearly visible.
This work is a simple little landscape painting of a grassy field on a cloudy afternoon. I painted this entire piece with the palette knife only. I used the tip of the knife to scratch in the details you can see in the foreground of the painting and tree trunks in the middleground, which really bring this work to life.
